How to use my computer as a FAX machine
People get confused about this. Please understand that Windows will not be able to work as a Fax machine if your computer does not have a fax/modem device in it.
What is fax/modem?
A fax modem is a piece of hardware that makes your computer capable to transmit and receive documents and faxes.

You will also need a RJ-11 cable (phone cable) in order to connect your modem to your phone line (yes, you need a phone line).
Once you have these pieces, you can convert your computer in a fax machine.
- Now, if you do not want to complicate yourself with an Internal Fax/modem device, just buy a USB fax modem and plug it into one of your computer’s USB ports. (You may need to install its drivers). Then, follow the steps located here.
- If you have opted for an internal device, follow the steps below to install it.
INSTALLING YOUR INTERNAL FAX/MODEM DEVICE
1. Open your computer (In case your pc has screws holding the cover, take them off with a screwdriver)
2. Identify your PCI slots (computers have different quantity of PCI slots, so do not panic)
3. Remove the PCI covers (consult your computer manual if your computer has special covers)
4. Install your fax/modem device.
5. Close your PC and connect your phone line to the fax/modem device.
If in case you want to keep both computer and telephone connected, you must use a phone line splitter
Now just follow these simple steps to configure your Windows system in order to send and receive documents and faxes.

2. click All Programs, and then click Windows Fax and Scan.
3. At the bottom of the left pane, click Fax, and then click New Fax on the toolbar to launch the Fax Setup wizard.
4. Click Connect to a fax modem and follow the very simple instructions.
